What Is “Casting Lots” in the Bible?

Throughout the Bible, we find references to a practice known as casting lots.

But what exactly does it mean, and why did God’s people use it?

What Does Casting Lots Mean?

Casting lots was an ancient practice used to make decisions by using objects that were cast, drawn, or selected to determine an outcome. The exact method is not always specified in Scripture, but it may have involved stones, sticks, or other small objects. In some instances, the outcome was understood to reveal God’s decision in a particular matter.

One of the clearest descriptions of the practice is found in Proverbs 16:33:

The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.  (Proverbs 16:33, ESV)

This verse expresses the biblical understanding that even when a decision appears random to human observers, God remains sovereign over all things.

Examples of Casting Lots in Scripture

Casting lots appears in several important biblical events.

Identifying Jonah

In Jonah 1:7, the sailors cast lots to determine who was responsible for the storm threatening their ship. The lot fell on Jonah, revealing his involvement in the situation. God used this event to expose Jonah’s disobedience.

Choosing Matthias

In Acts 1:23–26, the apostles cast lots to select a replacement for Judas Iscariot. After praying for God to reveal whom He had chosen, they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to join the eleven apostles.

Was Casting Lots the Same as Gambling or Divination?

Not necessarily. Although casting lots could involve an element of chance, its biblical purpose was often different from gambling, which typically involves wagering something of value. Scripture also distinguishes the practice from forbidden forms of divination and occult activity (Deuteronomy 18:10–12).

In the Old Testament, casting lots was sometimes commanded or used as a legitimate means of making decisions. However, the Bible does not authorize Christians to use random methods as a way to discover God’s will in every situation.

It is also worth noting that the apostles’ use of lots in Acts 1 occurred before the Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost in Acts 2.

Scripture does not explicitly command Christians to continue this practice as a standard method of discerning God’s will.

Should Christians Cast Lots Today?

Christians should be careful not to treat casting lots as a guaranteed way to receive divine guidance.

The New Testament emphasizes prayer, wisdom, Scripture, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the Christian life (James 1:5; Romans 12:2; Galatians 5:16).

God is sovereign, and Proverbs 16:33 reminds us that nothing falls outside His authority. However, trusting God’s sovereignty does not mean every random outcome should be interpreted as a personal message from Him.

The key takeaway: Casting lots was a biblical method of determining outcomes that God sometimes used to accomplish His purposes. It reminds us of His sovereignty, but Christians today should primarily seek His will through His Word, prayer, godly wisdom, and obedience to Christ.
