Some of My Favorite Psalms

There’s something special about the Book of Psalms.

Whether you’re going through a difficult season, looking for encouragement, or simply wanting to spend more time in God’s Word, the Psalms have a way of speaking to the heart.

One of my favorite things about them is how honest they are. We see joy, fear, sadness, repentance, worship, and complete trust in God. They remind us that we can bring our struggles to the Lord while remembering who He is and how faithful He has always been.

Here are seven of my favorite Psalms and a little bit about why I love them.

1. Psalm 23 — The Lord Is My Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  (Psalm 23:1, ESV)

Psalm 23 is one of the most well-known passages in Scripture, and for good reason. It reminds us that God is our Shepherd, guiding us, providing for us, and staying with us through life’s darkest valleys.

I especially love the reminder that we’re not promised a life without hardship, but we can trust that God is with His people through it. Sometimes we don’t know where life is taking us, but we can trust the One leading us.

A reminder: You don’t have to have everything figured out when you have a Shepherd you can trust.

2. Psalm 27 — Finding Courage in God

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?  (Psalm 27:1, ESV)

I love this Psalm because it reminds us where our confidence should come from. It’s not about pretending we never get scared or that life is always easy. It’s about knowing that God is greater than whatever we’re facing.

David experienced danger and uncertainty, yet he continued to seek the Lord and trust in Him.

It’s easy to let fear take over when we don’t know what comes next. Psalm 27 encourages us to keep our eyes on God instead of allowing our circumstances to determine our faith.

A reminder: Faith doesn’t mean you’ll never feel afraid. It means you have Someone greater than your fears to turn to.

3. Psalm 34 — Taste and See That the Lord Is Good

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!  (Psalm 34:8, ESV)

This verse is a beautiful invitation to recognize God’s goodness for ourselves.

What makes this Psalm especially meaningful is that David wrote it in connection with a time when he was escaping danger. He wasn’t writing from a life free of problems. He was praising God in the middle of difficult circumstances.

I think that’s something we can all learn from.

It’s easy to thank God when everything is going well, but we should also remember His goodness when life gets difficult.

God’s goodness doesn’t disappear just because we’re going through a hard season.

A reminder: Don’t let today’s struggles make you forget God’s faithfulness.

4. Psalm 46 — Be Still and Know

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”  (Psalm 46:10, ESV)

This is one of those verses that we can all benefit from remembering.

Life gets busy. We worry about the future, stress over things we can’t control, and sometimes forget to slow down and remember who is actually in control.

In context, this Psalm celebrates God’s power and sovereignty over the earth and the nations. Even when the world feels chaotic, God remains God.

That doesn’t mean we ignore our responsibilities. It means we do our part while trusting Him with what we cannot control.

A reminder: You don’t have to carry the weight of the entire world on your shoulders. God is still on His throne.

5. Psalm 51 — A Heart of Repentance

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.  (Psalm 51:10, ESV)

Psalm 51 is a powerful reminder of our need for God’s mercy and forgiveness.

After David’s sin was exposed, he turned to God in repentance. Instead of simply asking for his problems to go away, he asked God to cleanse and renew his heart.

I think this is an important Psalm for every Christian because we all struggle with sin. We should never become comfortable with it, make excuses for it, or assume we can overcome it through our own strength.

Instead, we need to be honest before God, repent, and continually seek His grace.

Thankfully, our hope isn’t in being perfect. Our hope is in the mercy of God and the forgiveness made possible through Jesus Christ.

A reminder: When you sin, don’t run away from God. Turn to Him in genuine repentance and seek His forgiveness.

6. Psalm 91 — Finding Refuge in God

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.  (Psalm 91:1, ESV)

Psalm 91 is a beautiful reminder that God is our refuge and that we can trust Him even when life feels uncertain.

The Psalm uses imagery of shelter, protection, and safety to describe the security found in the Lord. I find that especially encouraging when thinking about the fears and uncertainties we face every day.

Of course, trusting God doesn’t mean Christians will never experience suffering or hardship. Rather, it means our ultimate hope and security is found in Him, not in our ability to control everything around us.

As Christians, we can also look to the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Even death itself will not have the final word over those who belong to Him.

A reminder: We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we can trust the God who holds our future.

7. Psalm 121 — My Help Comes From the Lord

My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.  (Psalm 121:2, ESV)

I love how straightforward this Psalm is.

Where does our help come from? The Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

It’s easy to put our confidence in money, success, relationships, or our own abilities. While those things can be good gifts, none of them can replace God.

This Psalm reminds us to lift our eyes beyond our immediate circumstances and remember the One who created everything.

Whatever you’re facing today, you can bring your worries, questions, and needs before Him in prayer. He is faithful to His people, and we can continue to trust Him even when we don’t understand everything happening in our lives.

A reminder: Look to God first, and not as a last resort when everything else fails.

These are seven of my favorite Psalms, and each one reminds me of something important about walking with God.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that He is our Shepherd. Other times, we need courage, repentance, protection, or simply a reminder that He is still in control.

That’s one of the reasons I love studying Scripture. No matter how many times we read a passage, there’s always an opportunity to reflect more deeply on God’s character and what His Word teaches us.

I’d encourage you to read these Psalms in their entirety. Take your time, consider the context, and think about how each passage applies to your walk with the Lord.

What are some of your favorite Psalms? I’d love to hear which passages have encouraged you, strengthened your faith, or helped you through a difficult season.
