There is something beautiful about autumn.
The air gets cooler. The days grow shorter. Green leaves begin turning red, orange, and yellow before eventually falling to the ground. What looked alive and vibrant only a few weeks earlier begins to fade.
And yet, there is something deeply familiar about it.
Every year, the seasons change. Summer gives way to fall, fall to winter, winter to spring, and eventually summer returns again. The world around us is constantly changing.
So are we.
Our circumstances change. Our relationships change. Our jobs change. Our families change. Our bodies change. Some seasons of life bring tremendous joy, while others bring grief, uncertainty, disappointment, or loss.
But there is One who does not change.
God remains.
The God Who Does Not Change
The Bible speaks remarkably clearly about God’s unchanging nature.
Through the prophet Malachi, God declares:
“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. (Malachi 3:6)
That statement comes in the middle of a passage where God’s people have been unfaithful to Him. Yet God’s character and covenant faithfulness have not changed.
James makes a similar point:
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. (James 1:17)
God is not becoming better because He was imperfect before.
He isn’t becoming wiser because He lacked knowledge.
He isn’t becoming more loving because He suddenly discovered compassion.
God is God.
His character does not fluctuate with circumstances.
This is what Christians mean when we speak of the immutability of God: God does not change in His being, character, purposes, or promises.
And that should be profoundly comforting.

Everything Around Us Changes
Autumn gives us a visible reminder that creation is constantly changing.
As daylight decreases and temperatures change, trees undergo biological changes that cause chlorophyll to break down, revealing other pigments and producing the colors we associate with fall. Eventually, most leaves detach and fall.
The leaves don’t stay green forever.
And neither do our circumstances.
There may have been a season when everything seemed to be going exactly as planned. Then something changed.
A relationship ended.
A loved one passed away.
A job disappeared.
A financial situation changed.
A child grew up.
A dream didn’t work out.
A new responsibility arrived.
Sometimes the change is wonderful. Sometimes it hurts.
But regardless of what changes around us, God does not become someone different.
The God who was faithful yesterday is faithful today.
The God who was good in the season of abundance is still good in the season of difficulty.
The God who heard you when life was easy still hears you when life is painful.
Jesus Christ Is the Same
The New Testament gives us one of the simplest and most powerful statements about God’s unchanging nature:
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)
Think about what those words mean.
Yesterday.
Today.
Forever.
Our lives exist within time. We experience past, present, and future. We grow older. Circumstances shift. Our emotions change.
But Christ remains the same.
The Jesus who showed compassion to the broken still has compassion.
The Jesus who forgave sinners still saves sinners.
The Jesus who promised to build His church is still building His church.
The Jesus who conquered death is still Lord over death.
And the promises of Christ don’t become less reliable because our circumstances become less predictable.
In fact, God’s unchanging character is precisely what gives us confidence in His promises.
Hebrews says that God demonstrated “the unchangeable character of his purpose” so that believers could have “strong encouragement” to hold onto the hope He has given us.
When Your Season Changes
Maybe you’re entering a new season of life right now.
Maybe you’re excited about it.
Maybe you’re terrified.
Maybe you’re grieving something you wish hadn’t changed.
Whatever your circumstances are, remember this:
Your circumstances are not your foundation. God is.
If you build your hope entirely on circumstances, your hope will rise and fall with them.
But if your hope is rooted in God, you have something far more stable.
The leaves may fall.
The seasons may change.
People may come and go.
Plans may succeed or fail.
But God remains.
That is the kind of God we need. Not a God who changes with the weather. Not a God whose character depends upon our circumstances. Not a God who makes promises today and becomes someone else tomorrow.
We need the God who remains.

Let Autumn Remind You
So the next time you walk outside and see the leaves changing, stop for a moment.
Notice the colors.
Notice the leaves falling.
Notice the change.
And let it remind you of something greater than the beauty of autumn:
Everything around you is temporary. God is not.
Your current season will eventually change.
Your circumstances will change.
You will change.
But God remains faithful.
And for the Christian, that means our ultimate hope isn’t found in having a life where nothing ever changes.
Our hope is found in having a Savior who never changes.
So let the leaves fall. Let the seasons change. And when life changes around you, remember:
God remains.
