Seeking First the Kingdom of God: A Study of Matthew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.  (Matthew 6:33)

Matthew 6:33 sits at the heart of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, a passage packed with practical guidance for living a Christ-centered life.

This verse is both a command and a promise, calling believers to reorder their priorities and trust God with the outcomes.

1. Understanding “Seek First the Kingdom of God”

The word “seek” in Greek is ζητέω (zēteō), which conveys a continuous, active pursuit—not just casual interest.

Jesus isn’t suggesting a one-time glance at God’s kingdom… He’s calling for persistent effort and devotion.

The “kingdom of God” refers to God’s rule and reign, both a present reality and a future hope. It’s not just a political or geographic kingdom, but a spiritual one where God’s will is done.

Seeking the kingdom means striving to align our lives with God’s priorities: love, justice, mercy, and holiness.

2. “And His Righteousness”

Righteousness here means moral integrity, right living, and faithfulness to God.

In context, Jesus contrasts human anxiety over food, drink, and clothing (Matthew 6:25–32) with trusting God’s provision.

Pursuing righteousness means letting God’s standards guide your decisions, interactions, and daily life.

3. “All These Things Will Be Added to You”

This is the promise of divine provision.

Jesus points to the natural world—birds of the air and lilies of the field (Matthew 6:26–30)—as proof that God cares for His creation.

When our focus is on God’s kingdom and righteousness, the Father provides for our material needs.

Importantly, this is not a call to passive waiting but an assurance that God will reward faithful seeking. “All these things” doesn’t mean unlimited wealth, but the essential provisions and wisdom to live faithfully.

4. Practical Applications

Prioritize Daily Devotion

– Begin each day with prayer, Scripture, and reflection on God’s will. Let your first thoughts and actions be kingdom-focused.

Evaluate Your Goals

– Examine your ambitions. Are they self-centered or kingdom-centered? Align your pursuits with God’s values.

Trust God in Provision

– Resist anxiety over material needs. Practice gratitude and stewardship, trusting that God is faithful.

Live Righteously in Community

– Seeking righteousness isn’t private; it shows in how we love and serve others, promoting God’s reign in tangible ways.

5. Reflection Questions

• What does it look like for me to actively seek God’s kingdom in my daily routine?

• Where am I allowing anxiety about material needs to distract me from faith?

• How can I demonstrate God’s righteousness in my relationships, work, and decisions this week?

Matthew 6:33 is both liberating and challenging. It liberates us from worry and self-centered striving and challenges us to live with purpose, focusing on God’s priorities.

By seeking God first, we participate in His kingdom and experience His faithful provision.
